The Spanish actor is the next to set to tackle the modern Prometheus in Universal’s revamp of its monsters range, after Tom Cruise, Johnny Depp and Russell Crowe.

Javier Bardem is in talks to play Frankenstein’s monster in a new series of films from Universal Studios revivifying its classic horror heroes.

Variety reports that Bardem was in talks for Frankenstein, with the journalist later confirming on Twitter that he was referring to the doctor’s creation, not the doc himself.

The 007 star is the top choice to play the iconic creature for the studio's new film franchise, which will reboot classic monster movies. Tom Cruise will battle the title creature in The Mummy, Russell Crowe is playing a new version of Dr. Jekyll, Johnny Depp is on board to portray the Invisible Man, and Dwayne Johnson is rumored to be the top choice for the Wolf Man.

Bardem was first linked to Universal bosses' monster movie plans when he was approached to play the role of Dr. Jekyll in the studio's upcoming remake of The Mummy, but he passed on the part, and it was offered to Russell Crowe, who will appear in The Mummy remake, alongside Tom Cruise.

Universal is currently in development on Frankenstein as well as Bride of Frankenstein. There are also rumours that Mary Shelley’s characters might make an appearance in the Tom Cruise-starring The Mummy, which is about to end shooting.

The monster has already featured in 48 films, most recently 2015’s Victor Frankenstein, with James McAvoy as the surgeon and Daniel Radcliffe his trusty assistant, Igor.

The 47-year-old actor Javier Bardem is Penélope Cruz's spouse. He has received three Oscar nominations, and won one as Best Supporting Actor for his outstanding performance as psychotic killer Anton Chigurh in No Country for Old Men (2007).

Besides, Javier Bardem is also well-known for his role of Silva, James Bond's enemy in the blockbuster Skyfall (2012). Bardem was most recently seen in Sean Penn’s “The Last Face” and is currently filming Darren Aronofsky’s untitled film opposite Jennifer Lawrence. He also has “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales,” which bows next summer.

The Mummy will open in U.S. theaters on June 9th, 2017, followed by Untitled Universal Monster Franchise Films on April 13th, 2018 and February 15th, 2019.
