Radcliffe reflects on what he thinks got him the role in a new interview.
Daniel Radcliffe became an international superstar when still a child after being cast as the lead in the Harry Potter series. In an interview with Huffington Post, casting director Janet Hirshenson shared the reason why Daniel Radcliffe was chosen as Harry Potter. It wasn’t because he was cute, it was because he had balls.
“There were two [for the part of Harry]. Chris right away liked Daniel, but there were a couple of people who went, ‘Hmm. That other kid’s interesting,’” Hirshenson said. “The other kid was terrific and very vulnerable and very Harry-looking, but besides that, Harry was going to become a very powerful kid, too. And Daniel had both sides. He was very vulnerable, but the other kid ― it was like, he [was] not going to have the balls that Daniel has, to put it that way.”
The Huffington Post got to talk with Radcliffe while he promoted his new movie, Jungle. When the subject of Harry Potter inevitably came up, Radcliffe Radcliffe shared the reason he got the role. He doesn't think he was inherently the best actor auditioning for the role, in fact quite the opposite. He admits that he wasn't the best actor at that age, but believes that he had a spirit that impressed those making the decisions to cast him. According to Radcliffe...
“The thing that I will always say about myself is I was not the most gifted child actor. When I look at other young actors, like when I look at the kids on Stranger Things or shows like that, I'm just like, 'Holy! My god! How are you doing that?' It's amazing. The thing I think I really was good at, and the thing I had, which was a huge advantage for me, was I just loved it.”
It’s this same passion that eventually swayed Warner Bros. and Hirshenson into making their decision, and the rest is history.
“I loved being on set. I was good at being on set. I loved learning how to be helpful. The greatest thing about being on set is you get to be part of a team. That’s the most special thing about it, and you get to feel like with everyone else you are making this thing together, and I loved that feeling straight away. I think that was definitely what made me a great fit for those films.”
The entire Harry Potter film franchise, along with the first movie in the Fantastic Beasts spin-off series, is available here to watch. Four more Fantastic Beasts movies are in development, with Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald targeting a release window near the end of the year.
