Jared Leto Not Sure If He'll Return in Suicide Squad 2

Jared Leto admits that he doesn't really know if he's in Suicide Squad 2 or not.

Jared Leto, who recently appeared in Blade Runner 2049, chatted with Collider about his role in the movie when the subject of the Joker inevitably came up. Leto was asked about Gavin O’Connor directing Suicide Squad 2, and if he was going to play The Joker in that movie or the Joker/Harley Quinn movie next year. It sounds like a decision hasn’t been made yet.

“A lot of moving parts, we’ll see what happens,” Leto replied. “I think Gavin is incredibly talented, he seems to be the perfect director for Suicide Squad 2. I think he’s a really gifted filmmaker and I really love his work.”

So, no confirmation on Joker for the sequel, but it's also unclear exactly who is coming back for Suicide Squad 2. The only three characters who seem like a sure thing are Will Smith's Deadshot, Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn, and Viola Davis' Amanda Waller; everyone else is kind of free game. As for the Joker's chances, they seem decent. He was previously rumored to be in the sequel, and the marketing for the original film put such a heavy emphasis on him (even though the actual left much of it on the cutting room floor). On the other hand, Leto's Joker was controversial among viewers, with unique mannerisms and a bevy of tattoos. Plus, Leto was rumored to have been mad about the news that other people will be playing the Joker, so maybe he isn't thrilled to come back.

With plans for a sequel all but a given after the film’s smash theatrical run, everything with Suicide Squad 2 has hardly been automatic. The first film’s director, David Ayer, bowed out of the sequel to develop the DCEU tale Gotham City Sirens, and talks with Mel Gibson and Jaume Collet-Serra to take over the director’s reigns both hit the wall. Fortunately, Suicide Squad 2 finally got some momentum in late August with news that Warner Bros. wanted to fast-track the film into production, which was followed by the hiring of O’Connor (The Accountant, Warrior) a couple weeks later to write, and possibly direct, the sequel.

Jared Leto is currently starring in Blade Runner 2049, which has garnered praise from the movie community though it's been declared a box office bomb that won't make back it's budget. Some call it a cult phenomenon in the making.
