Zachary Levi has been cast as the lead character in forthcoming DC movie Shazam!
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Zachary Levi has boarded to play Captain Marvel in Shazam, which follows a boy named Billy Batson, who can transform into an adult superhero by uttering the magic word “Shazam!” The name is an acronym of the ancient world gods and historical figures Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles and Mercury, from which the big Batson derives his heroic attributes when in adult form. As Movieweb reports, Shazam! has been in development for a while and, while Levi’s casting has been confirmed, there are still holes to be filled in the cast list. The movie will be directed by David F. Sandberg (Annabelle: Creation) and is currently set for release on April 5, 2019.
Levi is best known for more comedic roles such as TV's Chuck, but does already have a foothold in the Marvel universe, playing Fandral in two of the Thor films for Marvel. While the news was broken by The Hollywood Reporter, the first mention of the casting came from Sandberg himself, via Instagram...
Levi then posted a message to social media revealing how grateful he is to play the good-hearted superhero.
“Honored and greatly humbled to be a part of the #dcuniverse by bringing the original Captain Marvel to life. I am beside myself with gratitude, not only for this opportunity, but also the incredible outpouring of love and support from so many of you out there in the world. Now if you'll excuse me, I'll be in the gym for the rest of forever.”
“Shazam!” will be the next DC Cinematic Universe movie to begin shooting, ahead of the “Flashpoint,” “Batgirl,” which Joss Whedon will direct, and the “Suicide Squad” sequel, which Gavin O’Connor just came aboard to helm. DC and Warner Bros. are also currently developing a standalone film about “Black Adam,” Shazam’s arch nemesis. Dwayne Johnson is attached to play Black Adam in that pic..
