Oscar winner Julia Roberts is in talks to lead “Mr. Robot” creator Sam Esmail’s new high-profile drama series “Homecoming” at Universal Cable Productions and Anonymous Content.

While Julia Roberts has headlined many-a-marquee for blockbuster films over the past decades, it appears that the A-list actress is set to heed the call of the small screen. The Oscar winner is in talks to headline the TV drama series Homecoming. “Homecoming” is an adaptation of the fictional podcast of the same name from Gimlet Media, which launched this past November. The podcast is about staffers at a secret government agency where some are desperate to rejoin civilian life. Written by Esmail, the political thriller centers on a caseworker at a secret government facility, her supervisor and a soldier. Roberts is in talks to play the government caseworker.

The online version of the story is told through phone calls, conversations and therapy sessions, and starred Catherine Keener as a caseworker at a secret government facility who has to deal with her ambitious boss (David Schwimmer) and Oscar Isaac as a soldier who is desperate to lead a more normal life.

Esmail will develop the project under the terms of his overall deal with Universal Cable Productions. He is also currently developing the miniseries adaptation of “Metropolis.” The writers of the original podcast, Eli Horowitz and Micah Bloomberg, will write. Esmail will also serve as executive producer, alongside Chad Hamilton of Anonymous Content, Horowitz, Bloomberg and Alicia Van Couvering. Chris Giliberti, Alex Blumberg and Matt Lieber of Gimlet Media, which produced the podcast, will also executive produce.

The news follows shortly after Roberts’ first TV series “Today Will Be Different,” based on the Maria Semple novel, landed at HBO. Roberts is set to produce and star in the series, which hails from Annapurna Television. Semple will write and executive produce.
