The Deadpool Sequel Is Like Rush Hour of Superhero Movies

Deadpool creator recently compared Deadpool and Cable’s relationship in the film to the buddy cop duo in Brett Ratner’s Rush Hour.
During an interview with ComicBook.com at San Diego Comic-Con, comic book writer Rob Liefeld predicted the dynamic between Ryan Reynolds‘ Deadpool and Josh Brolin’s Cable to be a lot like Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker’s characters in the Rush Hour movies.
“[Josh Brolin’s] such a great actor, that’s where it starts, and gravitas, and who else really is going to hold their ground with Ryan as Wade/Deadpool? That is energy unbridled, and so you’ve gotta hold your ground. When I see the two of them I’m like ‘It’s going to be comic book’s equivalent to Rush Hour’, and I don’t know if comic fans are ready for it. I think it’s going to be great.”
Liefeld added more on social media on Saturday. “The pairing of Deadpool and Cable has always been a contrast in style and combustible. They have been a buddy cop film pairing,” he tweeted. On Instagram he wrote, “Take your pic[k] from Lethal Weapon to Rush Hour to Turner & Hooch!! But better!!”
A few weeks into filming, director David Leitch has nothing but compliments to throw Brolin’s way. He tells IGN:
“When he graciously agreed to do the role, Ryan and I were through the roof; we love him. He’s such a great actor, he brings a humanity to Cable, but he also has the depth of acting chops to hang with the comedy when needed. He’s bringing that character to life in the short twelve days we’ve been shooting and I couldn’t be happier.”
Continuing his high praises for Brolin, Liefeld also cited some of the actor’s greatest work to date, highlighting his range as a thespian, which is pivotal in making Deadpool 2 feel like not just a joke factory but a film that actually has important stakes:
“If you only see No Country for Old Men and Sicario, you’ve seen two great totally separate Josh Brolin performances. The Llewelyn who is sullen but determined and doesn’t speak much but you follow him the whole time in No Country, and Sicario, he’s this wild, shoot-em-up CIA guy.The guy is a tremendous actor.”
Once again starring Ryan Reynolds, T.J. Miller, Brianna Hildebrand and Karan Soni, along with newcomers Zazie Beetz as Domino and Josh Brolin as Cable, Deadpool 2 is set to hit theaters on June 1, 2018.
