New Line and Warner Bros. are moving forward with The Conjuring 3.
The Conjuring franchise has been scaring up piles of money for New Line Cinema ever since the first movie was released in 2013, and while there are several spinoffs on the way to keep horror fans satisfied, there have been questions about whether or not The Conjuring 3 will ever be made. Well, wonder no longer! It's been officially announced that a third installment in the main series is in the works, and there's already a few names attached to the project.
The actual plot of The Conjuring 3 is presently being kept under wraps, but it will indeed once again concern a case file of married paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, with stars Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga presumably returning to their lead roles.
"There are some [cases] that maybe aren't as well known, but they spent a fair bit of time researching and were part of [them],” Producer Peter Safran told Jimmy O of JoBlo. “Clearly, we can't do another haunted house movie, right? We can't do another supernatural possession in a house, with a family in peril. Right? So, it's got to be something different than that, I think. There are a lot of places to go, and there's a fair bit of material there."
Deadline reports that James Wan is also expected to be involved in the threequel, but in a smaller capacity. Wan directed the first two Conjuring movies, as well as co-wrote and produced The Conjuring 2, but for The Conjuring 3, he will only serve as producer through his company, Atomic Monster. Also returning is writer David Leslie Johnson, who wrote the script for The Conjuring 2. Johnson has worked on the script for Warner Bros.’ “Aquaman,” which Wan is currently directing. Johnson’s credits include the horror film “Orphan” ,”Unforgettable”, “Wrath of the Titans”, “Red Riding Hood” and several episodes of “The Walking Dead.” Peter Safran will also return to produce.
Two weeks ago, New Line launched development on The Crooked Man, a Conjuring 2 spinoff. Annabelle: Creation opens Aug. 11. The Nun opens on July 13, 2018.
