As an autopsy reveals that the actor had cocaine in her system when she died, her daughter asks for understanding.
On December 27, 2016, the world lost the beloved Star Wars actress Carrie Fisher. The hospital paperwork said the cause was a heart attack, then the autopsy report released Monday by the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office revealed that Fisher may have used cocaine three days before her initial cardiac episode on while on a flight from London to her home of Los Angeles December 23, 2016. And on Friday, June 16, Carrie's daughter Billie Lourd shared an emotional statement about the causes of her passing.
“My mom battled drug addiction and mental illness her entire life," she wrote. "She ultimately died of it. She was purposefully open in all of her work about the social stigmas surrounding these diseases."
Lourd wrote that her mom "talked about the shame that torments people and their families confronted by these diseases" and would want people to know there was no shame in any of it. “I know my Mom, she’d want her death to encourage people to be open about their struggles," she wrote. "Seek help, fight for government funding for mental health programs. Shame and those social stigmas are the enemies of progress to solutions and ultimately a cure. Love you Momby.”
The Associated Press report that the coroner also noted Fisher's atherosclerotic heart disease and drug use in relation to her death, but didn't expand upon either. In light of Lourd's statement, it's seems that Fisher's addictions and mental illness affected her death. Importantly though, her memory lives on, and Lourd is ensuring that her mother's life continues to be meaningful.
This year hasn't been an easy one for Billie Lourd, who suffered two major losses: the death of her mother, 60-year-old actress Carrie Fisher, and her grandmother, 84-year-old actress Debbie Reynolds. It's no doubt that Lourd is still likely reeling from her mother's passing, but she seems determined to start spreading awareness about mental health issues and drug addiction. She also seems to be leaning a lot on her friends and family, including her dad, famous Hollywood agent Bryan Lourd. Lourd has also been spending time with her rumored boyfriend, Taylor Lautner.
