Fans of the scifi thriller have been clamoring for a sequel since 2014, along with star Tom Cruise and director Doug Liman. While things are still up in the air, the movie’s definitely moving forward, with an official title and confirmed return of co-star Emily Blunt.
Director Doug Liman has been a busy man of late, working on drug trafficking biopic American Made with Tom Cruise and finding time to also shoot indie war drama The Wall. Behind all that, he's also been developing the Edge Of Tomorrow sequel and now, talking with Collider, he's not only confirmed that Emily Blunt will be back, she hadn't been announced by anyone as definitely involved yet, but also offered up the likely title for the new movie: Live Die Repeat And Repeat.
"We have an amazing story! It's incredible! Way better than the first film, and I obviously loved the first film," Liman said, who will also be back to helm the sequel, or prequel as he previously hinted at.
"It will be called Live Die Repeat and Repeat. Tom [Cruise] is excited about it, and Emily Blunt is excited about it.
"The big question is just when we'll do it. But it's not an if, it's a when."
As for that story that Liman’s so excited about, he previously told us that the film is actually a sequel that’s a prequel, noting his intention to upend how people look at sequels in the first place:
“I’ve had some radical ideas about how to make a sequel that would interest me, in the same way that I had ideas of how you make an independent film and then Swingers came along and it was like ‘Aha, that’s the perfect movie for me to test these ideas out on.’ I had these intellectual ideas on how you should make a sequel that are unlike how anybody else makes a sequel, and this script and this idea fit perfectly into that idea. So it’s gonna revolutionize how people make sequels. And again that’s why I try to do things like Invisible that are just, the revolution’s sort of built into the idea. It’s more heresy in the film world for me to pitch things that are sort of unheard of.”
Set in the future when Earth has been attacked by aliens, Edge of Tomorrow follows a cowardly public relations officer played by Cruise, who’s sent to the front lines. There, he finds himself in a time loop where he lives the same day over and over again, and enlists help from a fellow soldier, played by Blunt, to escape. While the film didn’t perform well at the box office, it’s a surprisingly good film. Still, a sequel was put into development last year with director Doug Liman back behind the camera and Race writers Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse scripting the sequel.
