Armie Hammer has joined the cast of the Ruth Bader Ginsburg biopic “On the Basis of Sex” from Participant Media.

Armie Hammer is set to star opposite Felicity Jones in Participant Media’s On the Basis Of Sex, which is based on the life of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Ginsburg is a compelling subject for a biopic, a woman who has spent her career championing women’s rights and smashed the glass ceiling more than once. She co-founded the first law journal on the subject of gender equality, became the first woman professor tenured at Columbia university. In 1993, Bill Clinton nominated her to the Supreme Court, making her the first female Jewish Justice.

As The Hollywood Reporter notes, the film, which will star Felicity Jones as the titular Ginsburg,  is directed by Mimi Leder from a script by Daniel Stiepleman, who is Ginsburg’s nephew, suggesting that On the Basis of Sex could be a more intimate portrait than most historical dramas. Hammer will play Ginsburg’s husband, and the film will apparently focus on Ginsburg’s early career as an attorney and her big wins in favor of anti-discrimination laws. Robert Cort will produce, while Jeff Skoll and Jonathan King of Participant Media will serve as executive producers. The feature is scheduled to open in 2018 to commemorate Ginsburg’s 25th anniversary as a Supreme Court Justice.

On The Basis Of Sex is planned for release through Participant’s output arrangements via Amblin Partners, with Focus Features distributing domestically. International output partners are Entertainment One (eOne), Nordisk, CJ Entertainment, Alibaba Pictures, Reliance Entertainment and Lev Cinema. Lionsgate will sell all available foreign territories.

Hammer is generating awards buzz for his performance in Luca Guadagnino's Call Me by Your Name, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. He most recently was seen in Free Fire and also voiced the role of Jackson Storm for Pixar's Cars 3.
