Steinfeld has recently become a big name by joining the Pitch Perfect franchise as well as getting awards buzz for her performance in The Edge of Seventeen.
According to Variety, Hailee Steinfeld is currently in talks to fill that extremely vital role in Bumblebee, director Travis Knight’s spin-off of the Transformers series about the lovable yellow car. We don’t know anything about the character Steinfeld would be playing, but based on all of the other movies in this series, she’ll probably be an endearingly awkward mechanic who possesses nearly superhuman levels of bravery and strength.
Steinfeld made her big screen debut in Joel and Ethan Coen’s 2010 western True Grit, where she stood toe-to-toe with some serious heavy-hitters and walked away with an Academy Award nomination for her trouble. Since then, she has acted steadily in all kinds of movies, dipping her toe into blockbuster waters with Ender’s Game, joining a popular franchise with Pitch Perfect 2, and proving that she’s still a powerhouse of an actress when she lands the right role with The Edge of Seventeen.
Laika CEO Travis Knight will be making his live-action directorial debut on this spin-off. He directed the Oscar-nominated “Kubo and the Two Strings.” While plot details are still unknown, the story will focus on the popular character who has appeared in all of Michael Bay’s “Transformers” films. Bay, Lorenzo di Bonaventura, Brian Goldner, Stephen Davis, Knight, Mark Vahradian and Steven Spielberg are producing. Christina Hodson penned the script after joining the “Transformers” writers’ room last year, where the studio began fleshing out ideas for other movies contained in the “Transformers” universe, but not necessarily set along the franchise timeline.
The project is the first spinoff in a planned Transformers Cinematic Universe that lays its foundations with this Summer’s “Transformers: The Last Knight”. That film made headlines earlier today when the Google Search listing for the film was updated to include a 182-minute runtime. Bay responded on Twitter saying the new film is shorter than any of the previous sequels which would bring the runtime in under 150 minutes. “Bumblebee” is slated for a June 8th 2018 release.
