Christian Bale is reflecting on his own time in the cape and cowl in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy.
Christian Bale was a guest on Variety’s “Playback” podcast this week to talk about his new movie Hostiles, as well as the rest of his career. While Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Batman franchise is regarded as one of the best ever by fans and critics, apparently, the actor has "mixed emotions" about the trilogy. The actor played Bruce Wayne for the trio of films before Ben Affleck took over for the DC Extended Universe connected the character with other DC Comics heroes. Though Bale's story seemed to have a beginning, middle, and end which satisfied fans, the actor is hesitant to share the feeling.
“[I have] mixed emotions about it. I’m always eternally grateful to Chris. For instance, Rescue Dawn, Werner (Herzog) and I had been trying to put that together for a few years. American Psycho, Mary Harron and I had been trying to put that together for a few years. No one was interested. Why? Because of me. Chris cast me in Batman and suddenly everyone said, ‘Yeah, alright. We’ll go with him.’ It did change everything. It was the first time I had done a film of that magnitude. That was a real learning curve for me. I wrestled with it for a long time. I still do on occasions. But I’m just learning, hey, accept the good things.”
He also says his commitment to method acting may have backfired on him while filming the movies, isolating him and making him a not too happy camper:
“At my suggestion I said, ‘no one can ever see me without the cowl on. They cannot. You cannot bust, blow apart that mystery. So we must not.’ So, I’ve got to be in a tent the whole time and seven months later I’m like, ‘oh my god, this was my idea, wasn’t it? I’m still in it.'”
This isn’t the first time that Bale has had mixed emotions about the Dark Knight Trilogy. Last year he said he was disappointed in his portrayal of Batman. “I didn’t quite manage what I hoped I would throughout the trilogy,” Bale told Yahoo. “Chris [Nolan] did, but my own sense of self is like, ‘I didn’t quite nail it.’”
In that Yahoo interview, Bale went on to say that Heath Ledger “kind of completely ruined” all of his plans, because his performance was much more interesting.
