Don’t let anyone tell you young adult fiction isn’t useful.

There are many lessons to be learned from Suzanne Collins Hunger Games trilogy:  The ravages of inequality, for example, or the dangers of a government with too much control over citizens' lives. But 12-year-old Megan Gething learned more from the Hunger Games than that and she used what she learnt there to save her friend.

Megan Gething, said that her friend needed help after slipping down a mud bank next to a metal cofferdam in Massachusetts, leaving a lengthy 10-inch long and 3-inch wide wound on her leg. She quickly thought about what she learned when she originally read the Hunger Games, in which author Suzanne Collins explains how Katniss Everdeen cuts off a sleeve from her shirt and uses a tourniquet for Peeta with the help of an arrow. This is a major difference between the books and the movie, as Katniss saves Peeta's life, but he loses his leg in the book. In the movie, she helps Peeta when he is wounded and he keeps his leg.

In Megan's case, she held clothing against her friend's leg to reduce blood loss. Her friend Mackenzie George definitely did not end up losing a leg, although she did have to have to have surgery at the Boston Children's Hospital, on the off-chance there was muscle or nerve damage. Thankfully, she was fine. "“Megan was the star of the show. Thank goodness she was there. Mackenzie would have lost a lot more blood, and it could have been life-threatening if she hadn't done what she did," Mackenzie’s dad Gregory stated. Mackenzie is slated to make a full recovery.

The Hunger Games (and its sequels, Catching Fire and Mockingjay) tell the dystopian story of Katniss Everdeen, a “tribute” from her district to represent them in the annual Hunger Games, which sees two participants from 12 districts compete against each other to win food, money, and the title. However, the actions of Katniss and her fellow District 12 tribute, Peeta Mellark, spark a revolution that sees various people in the many districts rise up against the tyrannical President Snow.
