According to The Hollywood Reporter, 20th Century Fox’s The New Mutants cast has added actor Charlie Heaton (Stranger Things, Shut In) to play Cannonball, a role previously eyed for Nat Wolff.

The Hollywood Reporter  reveals that the Stranger Things star is in negotiations to portray Sam Guthrie, aka the mutant Cannonball, in Fox's upcoming 2018 X-Men film. Cannonball is a mutant with the ability to essentially propel himself through the air like a rocket, creating an impenetrable field around himself in the process. Heaton joins Anya Taylor-Joy and Maisie Williams as Magick and Wolfsbane, respectively. Also among the cast is Rosario Dawson as mutant doctor Cecilia Reyes. Despite early rumors, James McAvoy will NOT make an appearance as Charles Xavier. There’s also a rumor that Henry Zaga of 13 Reasons Why will play Cannonball’s friend and teammate, Sunspot.

Josh Boone is directing the X-Men spin-off film, which focuses on a group of younger mutants who must deal with their own issues as well as the usual superheroics, albeit, as Boone has said, with more of a horror vibe this time around.

Fox has set an April 13, 2018 release date for New Mutants and the movie is still looking to cast several members of the team, like Native-American Danielle Moonstar, Brazilian Roberto Dacosta (Sunspot) and the alien shape-shifter Warlock. Knate Lee wrote the script alongside the director and production should kick off this July in Boston. New Mutants will be one of three Fox X-Men properties coming in 2018, including Deadpool 2 and X-Men: Dark Phoenix.

Heaton was one of the breakout stars of Stranger Things, and New Mutants marks the first feature project he’s signed on for since the show debuted. The actor starred in two films, the thriller Shut In with Naomi Watts and the Sundance indie As You Are, which were made prior to Stranger Things.
