Joel David Moore is set to reprise the role of scientist Norm Spellman in the upcoming Avatar sequels from Fox, according to Deadline.

Deadline, the source of this story, shares the following information about the upcoming follow-ups. For those that need a refresher, Moore plays Dr. Norm Spellman, an anthropologist working in the Avatar Program who becomes close with Jake Sully (Worthington). He was also one of the few humans allowed to remain in Pandora following the human-Na’vi battle, though it’s unclear if he had his consciousness uploaded to his avatar body, like Jake.

Not much is known about the sequel film’s plot, other than it takes place underwater. Fox has slotted the remaining sequels during the Christmas season of 2021, 2024 and 2025. 2009’s Avatar remains the highest-earning film worldwide with a $2.79 billion gross at the box office.

Moore can currently be seen on the big screen in the Jason Bourque-directed thriller Drone, and his film credits include DodgeBall: A True Underdog Story and Oliver Stone’s Savages.

Moore is not the only actor from the original 2009 film set to return for the planned sequel. Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, and Sigourney Weaver have all committed to reprising their respective characters, although it is unclear if they will continue to do so after Avatar 2.

20th Century Fox and Lightstorm Entertainment recently announced new release dates for all four of the films via the official Avatar Facebook page, saying, “Great to be working with the best team in the business! Avatar takes flight as we begin concurrent production on four sequels. The journey continues December 18, 2020, December 17, 2021, December 20, 2024 and December 19, 2025!” Avatar 2 was originally set for 2014, then 2018, but was pushed back yet again several months ago. In April, Cameron upped the release dates to a planned roll out from 2020 to 2025, and now, it seems, things have finally begun to take shape. Zoe Saldana confirmed to Screen Rant that the team begins shooting this summer, and Fear the Walking Dead‘s Cliff Curtis was announced as a new cast member earlier this month.
