Alice Braga Replacing Rosario Dawson to Play Dr. Cecilia Reyes In New Mutants

Alice Braga has joined Fox and Marvel’s X-Men spinoff, “New Mutants,” replacing Rosario Dawson in the role of Dr. Cecilia Reyes.
Braga, who stars in USA's Queen of the South, has joined the cast of Josh Boone's X-Men spinoff, New Mutants. Over the past several months, New Mutants has transformed from one of Fox’s numerous long-in-development X-Men films into one of the more unique and promising superhero movies slated to come out next year. That’s in no small part thanks to the film’s all-star cast of young up and coming actors, which includes Anya Taylor-Joy as Magik and Maisie Williams as Wolfsbane, Charlie Heaton as Cannonball, Blu Hunt as Mirage, Henry Zaga as Sunspot, and more.
Boone has promised that New Mutants will be “a full-fledged horror movie set within the X-Men universe. There are no costumes. There are no supervillains. We’re trying to do something very, very different.” Considering the success Fox has had stepping outside the bounds of traditional comic book movies with films like Deadpool and Logan, it seems that they’re looking to continue the trend here, although that strategy doesn’t seem to apply to its entire superhero movie slate, because the next main X-Men movie is a retread of the Dark Phoenix saga directed by longtime X-Men series writer/producer Simon Kinberg.
Braga takes over the role initially inhabited by Rosario Dawson who has exited the project. Reasons weren't provided for Dawson's departure, but a scheduling conflict with her Marvel Netflix shows may have played a part in her decision making. Luckily, filming had yet-to-begin in Boston, so the production schedule will likely remain unaffected by this casting change.
Brazil-born Braga has appeared in movies such as “I Am Legend” with Will Smith, “Predators,” and “Elysium” with Matt Damon. “Queen of the South” is currently in the midst of its second season.
