Amber Heard Responds to Johnny Depp Controversial Casting

Amber Heard has responded to JK Rowling‘s explanation for casting Johnny Depp in Fantastic Beasts 2.

On Thursday, the Harry Potter author and Warner Bros. both released statements explaining why they chose not to recast the role, which was criticised by many due to the domestic abuse allegations directed at Depp in 2016 by his ex-wife Amber Heard. Rowling used the divorce settlement and statement from Depp and Amber Heard as the defense, writing, “the agreements that have been put in place to protect the privacy of two people, both of whom have expressed a desire to get on with their lives, must be respected. Based on our understanding of the circumstances, the filmmakers and I are not only comfortable sticking with our original casting, but genuinely happy to have Johnny playing a major character in the movies.”

That same day, Heard, who says that Depp physically and verbally abused her throughout their short marriage, responded to the statements on her Instagram and Twitter accounts. In the posts, she shared the couple’s joint statement released after setting their divorce in August 2016.

In addition to Rowling claiming that keeping Depp, 54, in Fantastic Beasts was ‘the right thing’ to do, director David Yates previously defended the decision. Depp was cast as the evil wizard Gellert Grindlewald last year shortly after reports of abuse in his marriage to Heard surfaced, leading to plenty of controversy surrounding his part in the film with fans calling for the studio to recast the role. Things began to heat up again in recent weeks when the studio released a first look at the cast including Depp. Johnny Depp has not responded to the latest controversy surrounding his casting. One can imagine that this story is far from over and only just beginning, which could end up in the firing of Depp by Warner Bros. if the public outcry continues to ramp up.
