The sequel to Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim, Pacific Rim: Uprising has officially wrapped filming today after a successful 6-month shoot.
Filming on “Pacific Rim: Uprising” has officially wrapped. John Boyega, the film’s star, celebrated the end of production with a post on his Instagram.
“It’s been an amazing six months!” he wrote. “That’s a wrap.”
The mecha vs. monsters vs. inter-dimensional alien epic that is Pacific Rim will finally return in 2018 with the highly anticipated sequel to Guillermo del Toro's 2013 movie. Titled Pacific Rim: Uprising, the sequel will follow on from the events of the first movie, which saw the giant robot Jaeger Gypsy nuke the inter-dimensional 'Breach' in the Pacific Ocean, which allowed the Kaiju to enter our world and wreak havoc.
Although the first film wasn’t a massive box office success domestically, pulling in a meager a little over $100 million stateside, the film performed well overseas, scoring an impressive $300 million worldwide. While plans for a sequel have been underway for some time now, it wasn’t until creator Guillermo del Toro left the project last year that things began to fall into place. Following his departure, it was announced that former “Daredevil” showrunner Steven S. DeKnight would make his feature film debut with “Pacific Rim: Uprising.”
"Pacific Rim: Uprising" will be directed by Steven S. DeKnight, who has taken over the helm from Guillermo del Toro. The majority of the cast members from the original 2013 "Pacific Rim" movie will unfortunately not be returning. The sequel will be starring an entirely new set of cast members, with the exception of two returning stars, namely the "Always Sunny in Philadelphia" star, Charlie Day, as Dr. Newt Geizler, and Burn Gorman as Hermann Gottlieb. Boyega will be joined by his fellow newcomers to the franchise, namely Scott Eastwood, Cailee Spaeny, Rinko Kikuchi, and Jing Tian. Aside from Boyega, there aren't yet any details about the characters the other cast members will be portraying.
Pacific Rim: Uprising will be released on February 23, 2018.
