Kong: Skull Island will do more than just bring the King back to the big screen.
Legendary‘s upcoming MonsterVerse is getting its second entry in just a few weeks with Kong: Skull Island, and as shared cinematic universes are want to do, it would appear the film has a post-credit scene setting up the next chapter, Godzilla: King of the Monsters.
A SciFied reader alerted the site to the final credits for Kong: Skull Island being posted at Sci-fi Japan, which features what likely is confirmation that the post-credit scene will lead into Godzilla: King of Monsters. Buried deep within the credits is a brief statement that acknowledges four creature cameos are featured somewhere in the film, all of which are owned by Toho Co. of Japan. Here's that brief statement from the final credits of Kong: Skull Island.
"Characters of Godzilla, King Ghidorah, Mothra and Rodan created and owned by Toho Co., Ltd."
Back in 2014, Godzilla director Gareth Edwards revealed at Comic-Con that rights to the above-mentioned monsters had been acquired by Legendary, but gave no confirmation that any plans were in place to use them in any Godzilla sequels. Edwards later dropped out of Godzilla: King of Monsters to eventually be replaced by Michael Dougherty, leaving the status of King Ghidorah, Mothra and Rodan as potential MonsterVerse characters up in the air.
It's possible that this post-credit scene will find a way to bridge the time gap between Kong: Skull Island and Godzilla 2, since Kong: Skull Island is set in the 1970s and Godzilla 2 will most likely be set in present day like 2014's Godzilla. It remains to be seen if any of the giant monsters in Kong: Skull Island, known as the Skullcrawlers, will be seen in Godzilla vs. Kong or Godzilla: King of Monsters.
Directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts, and starring Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, Toby Kebbell, Tom Wilkinson, John Goodman, Samuel L. Jackson, and John C. Reilly, Kong: Skull Island opens in the UK and US on March 10, 2017.
Directed by Michael Dougherty and currently starring Stranger Things' Millie Bobby, Godzilla 2: King of the Monsters begins production this June, in Atlanta and will release in theaters on March 22nd, 2019.
