Directors Glenn Ficarra and John Requa will be directing a Suicide Squad spin-off about the love story between the Joker and Harley Quinn.

Warner Bros. is developing an untitled tentpole movie starring Jared Leto as the Joker and Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn. Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, directors and executive producers of the hit NBC drama This Is Us and who also wrote and helmed the 2011 film Crazy, Stupid, Love, are in final negotiations to pen and helm the movie.

The Joker/Harley Quinn movie will come after Suicide Squad 2, which is being fast-tracked and is currently looking for a director. The characters are among the popular in DC's expansive rogues' gallery, frequently depicted as having a warped romance, and indeed, The Hollywood Reporter's source says to expect "an insane and twisted love story... When Harry Met Sally on benzedrine." The statement is particularly interesting, given that When Harry Met Sally is a movie about a pair of platonic friends facing the ups and downs of life in New York in the 1980s together and eventually forging a romantic connection based on 10 years of emotional intimacy.

The film comes after it was recently announced that a new Joker movie based on the character’s origins is in the works from Hangover director Todd Phillips. As reported by EW and other outlets Wednesday, Phillips’ Joker movie is being developed under a new, yet-unnamed WB banner separate from the DCEU.

Meanwhile, Leto previously refused to confirm whether he will return as the Joker in the Suicide Squad sequel.

“Talking about Joker is like talking about Fight Club: unless you want to gargle your testicles, it’s probably better to leave it,” he said. “He’s liable to jump out of the cupboard and just start having fun.”

Ficarra and Requa previously wrote and directed I Love You Phillip Morris (2009) and followed that up with the Crazy, Stupid, Love, which starred Steve Carell, Ryan Goslin and Emma Stone. The duo worked with Robbie when they wrote and directed the 2015 heist movie Focus and the 2016 war comedy Whiskey Tango Foxtrot.

Ficarra and Requa also exec produce and direct episodes of This is Us, NBC’s hit tearjerker that is up for nine Emmy Awards next month.
