Spider-Man: Homecoming sits at 97% on aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes, officially making it the highest-rated superhero movie of all time on the site!
After the review embargo lifted last week and the positive reviews emerged, excitement reached an all-time high in anticipation of the film’s release this weekend. Homecoming was officially rated fresh at 93% earlier this week on the review aggregator but has fittingly risen to 94%, officially making it the highest-rated Spider-Man movie of all time, on its opening day.
Thanks to the film’s positive reception, it now sits alongside The Dark Knight, Iron Man, and Spider-Man 2. As all three of those films are widely considered the best in superhero cinema, that puts Homecoming in some prestigious company. It also gives the MCU a new high-water mark after nearly a decade.
“Spider-Man: Homecoming” marks Spider-Man’s first stand-alone feature within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film draws inspiration from Marvel’s Ultimate Spider-Man run and teen comedy’s of the past as it follows Tom Holland as Peter Parker balancing his dual identity of a budding superhero while navigating the everyday life of a teenager in high school. The film has been met with praise being given to Holland for his performance as the Peter Parker/Spider-Man as well as Michael Keaton’s villainous Vulture and the diverse talents who fill out the cast.
The film stars Tom Holland, Michael Keaton, Zendaya, Donald Glover, Jacob Batalon, Laura Harrier, Tony Revolori, Tyne Daly and Bokeem Woodbine, as well as Robert Downey Jr., Marisa Tomei, Jon Favreau, Michael Chernus, Kenneth Choi, Hannibal Buress, Martin Starr, Michael Barbieri, Angourie Rice and Abraham Attah. Here’s the official synopsis:
A young Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tom Holland), who made his sensational debut in Captain America: Civil War, begins to navigate his newfound identity as the web-slinging super hero in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Thrilled by his experience with the Avengers, Peter returns home, where he lives with his Aunt May (Marisa Tomei), under the watchful eye of his new mentor Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.). Peter tries to fall back into his normal daily routine – distracted by thoughts of proving himself to be more than just your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man – but when the Vulture (Michael Keaton) emerges as a new villain, everything that Peter holds most important will be threatened.
