Star Wars: Episode IX director Colin Trevorrow promises that his sequel trilogy finale will pay the ultimate respect to the late great actress.

Colin Trevorrow's Star Wars 9 is set to officially begin shooting in January of 2018, and the director promises that the final installment in the sequel trilogy will honor and pay respect to the late Carrie Fisher. Fisher, who returned to the role of Princess Leia for The Force Awakens in 2015 passed away from a heart attack in December of 2016 after filming all of her scenes for The Last Jedi. In a new interview with The Irish Examiner (via StarWars.Net), Trevorrow talked about how Fisher’s death impacted the production, mentioning she originally was going to be a key focus of the film:

“She had a major role in the film and it’s something we had to deal with emotionally at first. Now we’ve had to deal with it in very practical ways and in a form of storytelling we know is going to honor her and keep her soul alive, but it is an unfortunate reality that we’re just going to have to handle. It’s been tough emotionally – and logistically we’ll figure that part out, but she was just very important to the Star Wars family and that was the hardest part.”

After her tragic passing last December, it was rumoured that CGI would be used to recreate her likeness for the movie – in the mold of Peter Cushing in Rogue One, but this was ruled out not too long ago. Trevorrow and Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy have both said that Fisher will not be recreated digitally through the use of CGI technology like Rogue One did with Leia and General Moff Tarkin. The use of CGI in Rogue One was tastefully done, but it does not seem like a good solution for Star Wars 9 and in a way might come off disrespectful to Carrie Fisher's memory.

Lucasfilm will undoubtedly make a heartfelt and tasteful tribute to Carrie Fisher within Star Wars 9. They understand better than anybody how vital Leia and Fisher are to the Star Wars community, so this is definitely not a matter they will treat lightly. How Leia’s storyline is ultimately resolved will be something the fans keep a close eye on, as everyone wants it to make sense for the narrative at hand while also paying tribute to the legend. It’s a terribly unfortunate situation for the filmmakers to be in, but the brain trust has done an excellent job managing the sequel trilogy so far, so they’ve earned trust to handle this in the best way possible.
