Star Wars: The Last Jedi Explores More Finn’s Past

Rey isn’t the only character in Star Wars: The Last Jedi with a mysterious past.

Entertainment Weekly had a discussion with actor John Boyega about whether or not we'll learn more about Finn's backstory in The Last Jedi. It seems the movie will give some information about Finn’s origins but won’t necessarily delve deeply into the character’s background. When asked if the movie would tell us something about Finn’s family, Boyega said:

“Yeah, definitely. But it’s not explored in depth in Episode VIII. But he definitely has a past that is troubled. … I don’t know how all that’s going to play out.”

Finn has an unknown background, having been taking as a child soldier by the First Order. He doesn't even know his real name! The one question the movie will address, at least in a small way, is why Finn suddenly decided to flee from the First Order after Kylo Ren ordered him and the other stormtroopers to massacre the villagers of Taunul (in the opening moments of Star Wars: The Force Awakens):

"We will learn more about his past and where he came from, and potentially why he made the decision [to escape] that he made. I'm also very curious. The question that needs to be answered is why he decided to leave as a stormtrooper in the first place. We will find out just a little bit more about him."

Thus far we have been assuming that the village assault was the reason that Finn left, but Boyega is implying that there was more to it than that. Director Rian Johnson says that, (light spoilers) despite the fact that Finn and Rey are separated for most of the movie, they’re stories will run parallel to each other:

“The big thematic push and pull in the movie is the past and what role the past has in moving us forward into the future.”

Summary: Having taken her first steps into a larger world in Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015), Rey continues her epic journey with Finn, Poe and Luke Skywalker in the next chapter of the saga.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi, directed by Rian Johnson, stars Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Mark Hamill, Oscar Isaac, Carrie Fisher, and Adam Driver. It will be released on December 15th.
