We’re still a day out from the release of Bright but Will Smith is already set to return for Bright 2.
While audiences have yet to be exposed to Suicide Squad director David Ayer’s fantasy action thriller, the critics already paint a pretty terrible picture. The $100 million blockbuster is currently scoring a 32% and a 3.6/10 average rating on Rotten Tomatoes and while some reviews have labelled it amongst the year’s worst, others have at least appreciated it for trying some things. However, Netflix has enough confidence in what they have to move forward with a sequel, as they reportedly already have one lined up. Here's what a new report from Bloomberg has to say about it.
"'Bright' is the company's first attempt at a big-budget Hollywood production, bringing together a bona fide movie star in a fantasy, buddy-cop tale that could have come from any studio playbook. Directed by David Ayer, who also made Suicide Squad, it's a warning shot to studios and theater owners that Netflix is targeting a big chunk of the $38.6 billion global box office. To underscore the commitment, the company has already ordered a sequel with Smith signed on."
Netflix reportedly spent north of $90 million picking up Bright, outbidding Warner Bros. and MGM. At least going by the trailers, David Ayer and company spent the money well. The movie looks truly big-budget in terms of effects, lighting, and other technical specs. The make-up effects on orc Joel Edgerton are particularly impressive. And in fact, the movie has been shortlisted by the Oscars for a Best Make-Up and Hairstyling nomination.
The synopsis for the first film reads as follows:
Set in an alternate present-day, this action-thriller directed by David Ayer (Suicide Squad, End of Watch, writer of Training Day) follows two cops from very different backgrounds (Ward, a human played by Will Smith, and Jakoby, an orc played by Joel Edgerton) who embark on a routine patrol night that will ultimately alter the future as their world knows it. Battling both their own personal differences as well as an onslaught of enemies, they must work together to protect a thought-to-be-forgotten relic, which in the wrong hands could destroy everything.
Bright arrives on Netflix on December 22nd.
