According to reports, the director is set to write and direct “Suicide Squad 2,” the biggest upcoming non-Justice League on the DC film schedule.

Variety is reporting Gavin O’Connor is officially on board to write Suicide Squad 2, with an eye for him to direct the sequel as well. Additionally, Variety reports Warner Bros. is hoping the film will begin production by the end of 2017. Previously, it was thought that Suicide Squad 2 wouldn’t start production until 2018, but if they begin this year, the film could potentially be ready for a 2019/2020 release date.

This announcement comes after rumors that Mel Gibson was even in the running for the antihero sequel. “The Shallows” director Jaume Collet-Serra was another frontrunner for the job, one that IndieWire wouldn’t have minded seeing get a chance behind the camera.

David Ayer directed 2016's Suicide Squad, which followed villains Deadshot, Harley Quinn, the Joker, Captain Boomerang and Killer Croc, who are forced into the service of the government in exchange for lighter sentences. Ayer is now developing Gotham City Sirens with Harley Quinn actress Margot Robbie, which focuses on the female villains of the DC Universe.

Suicide Squad 2 will feature the return of Deadshot (Will Smith), Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman), the villainous Joker (Jared Leto), and presumably the rest of the antihero squad: Killer Croc (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje), Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney), Katana (Karen Fukuhara), and Diablo (Jay Hernandez). It is unclear when the Suicide Squad follow-up will shoot because scheduling will be an issue with the stars' packed schedules. Will Smith is currently filming Aladdin and then is set for Ang Lee's Gemini Man, while Robbie is currently filming Mary Queen of Scots.

O’Connor previously worked with Ben Affleck, who plays Bruce Wayne/Batman in the DC Extended Universe, on the WB crime thriller The Accountant (which is also up for a sequel). O’Connor’s other credits include Jane Got a Gun, Warrior, and Miracle.
