After the emotional tour-de-force that was Furious 7, The Fate Of The Furious was always going to have to tread carefully with how it handled Paul Walker's Brian O'Conner. Because of the actor's tragic death during its production, 2015’s Furious 7 featured a great tribute to the character and star, along with the song “See You Again” that was dedicated to Walker. More specifically, at the end of the movie, Brian O’Conner is last seen driving down the road away from Dom and toward a life with Mia, their children, and most importantly, no bullets.

In Fate of the Furious, a slight nod towards Walker’s character Brian is made. The reference pointed out the legacy the character has had and the relationship Brian had with Vin Diesel’s Dom. In the film, Roman and Hobbs suggest that they should call Brian to help them in their latest mission but Letty shuts them down, saying that Brian should be left to enjoy his life.

Speaking with Collider, screenwriter Chris Morgan talked about the Brian reference:

“It’s so dramatic for the characters that at some point they would definitely turn to each other and say, ‘Oh my God, we gotta tell Brian, we gotta tell Mia. Something is going on with Dom, we don’t know what it is’. So I think from a practical point of view for the characters you needed to address it. For the audience, and just as a fan as the writer on it, I also wanted to have one moment where we were able to – specifically at the beat at the end of the film – say to the audience, ‘We’re thinking of him too’ in a respectful sort of way.”

In the end, Brian’s legacy continues on even though he’ll no longer be physically present.

Now that Dom and Letty are on their honeymoon and Brian and Mia have retired from the game — and the rest of the crew has been exonerated — the globetrotting team has found a semblance of a normal life. But when a mysterious woman (Charlize Theron) seduces Dom into the world of crime he can’t seem to escape and a betrayal of those closest to him, they will face trials that will test them as never before.
