While “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” has yet to hit theaters, Marvel has already set James Gunn to return to write and direct a third installment.

For the first time in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the director behind an original film and its sequel will be coming back to make another sequel. After directing both Guardians of the Galaxy and its upcoming sequel, mastermind James Gunn has confirmed he's on board to helm the series' third installment.

"I'm returning to write and direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3," Gunn said in a post on Facebook.

Gunn spoke incredibly highly of his partnership with Marvel Studios, saying it is "has been the best of my professional career."

As for the storyline of the film, he wrote, “Much of what’s happened in the MCU for the past ten or so years has been leading, in a big way, to the ‘Avengers’ Infinity War.’ ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ will happen after all that. It will conclude the story of this iteration of the Guardians of the Galaxy, and help catapult both old and new Marvel characters into the next ten years and beyond. I will be working side-by-side with Kevin Feige and the gang to help design where these stories go, and make sure the future of the Marvel Cosmic Universe is as special and authentic and magical as what we have created so far.”

Set to the backdrop of ‘Awesome Mixtape #2,’ Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 continues the team’s adventures as they traverse the outer reaches of the cosmos. The Guardians must fight to keep their newfound family together as they unravel the mysteries of Peter Quill’s true parentage. Old foes become new allies and fan-favorite characters from the classic comics will come to our heroes’ aid as the Marvel cinematic universe continues to expand.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is written and directed by James Gunn (Slither). The film marks the return of the original Guardians, including Chris Pratt (Jurassic World) as Peter Quill/Star-Lord; Zoe Saldana (Star Trek Into Darkness) as Gamora; Dave Bautista (Spectre) as Drax; Vin Diesel (Furious 7) as the voice of Groot; Bradley Cooper (American Sniper) as the voice of Rocket; Michael Rooker (Jumper) as Yondu; Karen Gillan (The Big Short) as Nebula; and Sean Gunn (Gilmore Girls) as Kraglin. New cast members include Pom Klementieff (Oldboy), Elizabeth Debicki (The Great Gatsby, Everest), Chris Sullivan (The Knick, The Drop) and Kurt Russell (The Hateful Eight, The Thing).

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will be released on May 5. Gunn’s entire post can be read on his Facebook page.
