Johnson will develop the trio of films in an undisclosed time period.

Disney has just closed a deal with “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” director Rian Johnson to develop a new trilogy of “Star Wars” films, the first of which he is also set to write and direct, with longtime collaborator Ram Bergman onboard to produce. The news was announced by Disney CEO Bob Iger during an conference call discussing Disney’s financial year of 2017.

“We all loved working with Rian on The Last Jedi,” said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm. “He’s a creative force, and watching him craft The Last Jedi from start to finish was one of the great joys of my career. Rian will do amazing things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy.”

“We had the time of our lives collaborating with Lucasfilm and Disney on The Last Jedi,” Johnson and Bergman said in a joint statement. “Star Wars is the greatest modern mythology and we feel very lucky to have contributed to it. We can’t wait to continue with this new series of films.”

The trilogy will be separate from the Skywalker saga and will, according to an official announcement on, “introduce new characters from a corner of the galaxy that Star Wars lore has never before explored.” Though it has yet to premiere, Johnson’s The Last Jedi has already turned heads, thanks to the creative world of the Canto Bight casino and the fan-and-merch-friendly new creatures called porgs. Speaking with earlier this week, Kennedy praised Johnson’s “fertile imagination,” saying: “There's a brief little moment in The Last Jedi where there’s a little porg, and then there's a baby porg next to the porg. It's the cutest thing. It doesn't get better than that.”

Recently, Kennedy teased that the Lucasfilm story room was already planning the next 10 years of "Star Wars" stories and name-checked the characters Rey, Poe, Finn and BB8 as potential storylines to follow. However, this new Johnson-verse sounds like a clear break from the Skywalker story series.

"Star Wars: The Last Jedi," the second in the core franchise's current trilogy, will premiere Dec. 15.
