That demonic nun from The Conjuring 2 will be returning to haunt your nightmares in the movie's spin-off The Nun, which now has a release date.
Coming Soon reports that New Line Cinema will release The Nun, the spin-off to The Conjuring, on July 13, 2018. Add that to the fact that “The Purge 4” is coming out on July 4, 2018 and it looks like that’ll be an interesting month for horror. Being right in the heart of the summer movie season is a bold strategy for a horror movie, but one that paid off in a big way last year for the studio with The Conjuring 2. That movie was released in June of 2016 and went on to gross a very impressive $320 million worldwide. It looks like the studio feels confident enough in The Nun to implement a similar release strategy.
The Hallow director, Corin Hardy, will be the man behind the camera for The Nun, which will follow a script penned by Gary Dauberman and James Wan. Wan will also produce the film alongside Peter Safran. Plot details about The Nun are scarce at the moment.
The demon nun came to life in “The Conjuring 2” from a painting by Patrick Wilson’s paranormal investigator Ed Warren and later attacked Vera Farmiga’s Lorraine Warren. “The Conjuring 2” deals with the 1977 case of demonic possession of an 11-year-old British girl, played by Madison Wolfe.
New Line has already successfully spun off 2014’s “Annabelle” from the demonic doll from 2013’s “The Conjuring.” “Annabelle” was a massive hit with $256 million worldwide on a $6 million budget, with a sequel set for August. “The Conjuring” and “The Conjuring 2” each grossed $320 million worldwide.
Wan previously told Digital Spy that there's a lot of potential for an expansion of The Conjuring's universe, saying there is always opportunity for more material.
"We've planted potential seeds in the first and second movie that I think would be fascinating were they to have a life of their own," he said.
The Nun will be the fifth film in the franchise, and will follow this summer’s Aug. 11 release of Annabelle 2.
Lights Out director David F. Sandberg is currently in post production on Annabelle 2, which he tells us “will be the Godfather II of creepy doll movies.” We’re told that the film’s protagonist is going to be a nun who is worried that her orphans are becoming prey to an evil entity. Could this nun tie into the story of The Conjuring 2 and its forthcoming The Nun spinoff?
