Felicity Jones, star of “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” is tapped to star in “Swan Lake”.
After battling the Empire in Rogue One (and coincidentally winning an Empire Award for her efforts), Felicity Jones is now attached to something with less interstellar conflict and more magic. She's on to star in a new cinematic take on Swan Lake. The film, to be produced by Mandeville Films, has Luca Guadagnino on board to direct with Kristina Lauren Anderson set to write the script. The property went on the market ahead of the July 4th long weekend, and no news yet as to who might have their hands on it.
The original “Swan Lake” was a ballet that premiered way back in 1877, and was written by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Of course versions of “Swan Lake” are still performed to this day, making one of the most popular ballets of all time. The story follows Odette, a princess that is turned into a swan by an evil sorcerer’s curse. Darren Aronofsky's 2010 thriller Black Swan used the play as inspiration for its story, but did not follow the storyline of the classic ballet. The new take will not involve any ballet but will instead use the story as the centerpiece for a major studio tentpole.
Jones recently starred as Jyn Erso who lead the group of Rebels that stole the Death Star plans in Rogue On: A Star Wars Story. She’s also known for her work in The Theory of Everything, for which she received a nomination for an Academy Award for Best Actress. She’s also known for films like The Tempest with Helen Mirren and Russell Brand, Inferno and A Monster Calls.
Guadagnino’s latest film, “Call Me by Your Name,” starring Armie Hammer, was a breakout at Sundance and is set to be released by Sony Pictures Classics on Nov. 24.
