Rowan Atkinson has begun filming the third movie in the Johnny English franchise.

Fans of Rowan Atkinson can rejoice, because it looks like a third Johnny English film has entered production. We already knew that Atkinson would return to the role of playing a hapless British spy, but the tentatively titled Johnny English 3 has already started shooting. In an image posted on Twitter, Working Title has shared a snap of a clapperboard with the film's title, which was captioned: "He's back! #JohnnyEnglish3."

Neal Purvis and Robert Wade, the British screenwriting team who has co-written six James Bond films including Spectre, have penned the script, while TV and film director David Kerr will helm the flick.

Rowan Atkinson will return to his buffoon spy character for the first time on the big screen since 2011’s Johnny English Reborn. In the past, Kerr was directed episodes of Fresh Meat, That Mitchell And Webb Look and Inside No. 9.

Not much is known about the third entry to the Johnny English trilogy but it will hopefully do better than Reborn in the box office. The original Johnny English received mixed reviews and was produced for $40 million (£30 million), but went on to take a huge $160 million (£121 million) at the global box office - a figure that was matched by the follow-up. Johnny English Reborn also featured an ensemble cast, with Gillian Anderson, Dominic West, Rosamund Pike, Richard Schiff and Daniel Kaluuya landing roles. Aside from Atkinson, it is not known if any prior castmembers will be returning for the latest instalment.

The Johnny English 3 shoot will close off a busy 2017 for the Mr. Bean actor, who has also been filming new episodes of the Maigret TV crime series. Johnny English 3 currently has a UK release date of October 12th 2018. No word on an American release yet, but we'll keep you posted.
