Joss Whedon Is Still Directing and Producing 'Batgirl'

Joss Whedon is still directing 'Batgirl' despite 'Justice League' being panned by critics.

A couple of days ago a rumor kicked into overdrive that Joss Whedon was not going to direct the upcoming Batgirl project in the wake of the somewhat critical reviews and middling box office performance of Justice League. But according to Entertainment Weekly, the rumors are untrue and Whedon is currently busily working on the script.

Fears about Whedon's future in the DC Extended Universe intensified in recent days because of the critical and box office failure of Justice League, the DC team-up movie Whedon took over for original director Zack Snyder earlier this year. Justice League opened with the lowest first weekend gross of any of the movies in DC's cinematic universes so far. It took $96 million in its first three days, well below Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice's $166 million opening haul last year. It has been reported that Warner could lose millions as a result, and it remains to be seen if this affects any of the DC movies in development. Whedon’s cut of Justice League featured what one review of the movie described as “a disconcerting number of Wonder Woman upskirt shots,” and Whedon’s ex-wife recently described Whedon himself as “a hypocrite preaching feminist ideals.”

Aside from that rumor, the last we heard about this project is that Batgirl will start shooting in 2018, which was confirmed by DC Films president Geoff Johns. Still, even if filming does in fact happen next year, Warner Bros. has yet to set a release date quite yet, which may be difficult to determine right now since Warner Bros. is developing so many other DCEU spin-offs like this. The studio is also moving forward with Gotham CIty Sirens, Suicide Squad 2, The Batman and a Harley Quinn vs. Joker movie, not to mention a second Justice League movie, The Flash, Cyborg, Green Lantern Corps, next year's Aquaman, which is in post-production, and Wonder Woman 2, which has been given a November 1, 2019 release date.
