The midseason premiere of The Walking Dead hit US screens with a vengeance last night, and found Rick (Andrew Lincoln) finally plucking up the courage to take on the Saviors.

In “Rock in the Road” (written by Angela Kang, directed by Greg Nicotero), we see chieftain Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) finally ready to take on the strongman Negan, and looking for allies.

Rick was beaten into a quivering, snot-dripping mess by Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), a psychotic madman who was born for the dystopia of the post-zombie apocalypse, and the first half of the season was about Rick trying to find a way to live under that madman’s thumb. The story now is about Rick rising up to fight the strongman. That takes courage, something he doesn’t lack. What he lacks is simply the numbers, and “Rock in the Road” is really about discovering the relative levels of taste for an all-out war among the various communities living under Negan’s thumb.

But not everyone is immediately down to defeat them, and Rick still needs to get some key players to join in on his plan.

Pacifist Morgan (Lennie James) tries to dissuade some of the others from attacking Negan and Saviors, suggesting that there will be unpleasant bloodshed resulting in the death of not just the enemy, but the innocent too. But despite the fact that Rick was told "no" by the other two communities, it's just a matter of time before the other townships come around and join the good fight.

All in all, the episode was undoubtedly a return to form for the series. After what was a painful start (not just for us, but for the characters that died a gruesome death) the seventh season is well and truly getting its groove back.

That’s down to seeing Rick and the rest of his crew get the fight back in their eyes, and stopping playing the victim to Negan and his thugs.

While he may have had some wins and some loses in recruiting a full army (find out next week what King Ezekiel has to say) one thing is clear and that’s Rick is ready for war, and so are we.
