Tom Hiddleston Confirms He Will Give Up The Loki Role After Thor: Ragnarok

Tom Hiddleston says that Loki will not return in the Avengers sequel.

The role of Loki created strong impression on the audience when The Avengers made its debut. With the combination between charm and tricks, the scheming brother of Thor has become a rare and precious figure in the film industry: a villain who is loved all over the world. Marvel certainly has recognized the potential of this character, and even mobilized fans to vote for God Of Mischief to become President. However, every party must come to an end, and the party of Loki and Hiddleston is no exception.

In an interview with Earwolf Podcast Network, Tom Hiddleston discussed many things, from his work in the biography movie I Saw The Light, blockbuster Kong: Skull Island to the position of Loki in Marvel Cinematic Universe, from Thor: Ragnarok to other related projects: “[Thor: Ragnarok] is coming around. I saw Chris Hemsworth in Australia. He lives about an hour away from where we were shooting Kong: Skull Island, and he was full of beans about Thor 3. Thor 3 will be cool because I’ve not done it for four years. I love working with Chris [Hemsworth]. This will be my last time out of the gate.”

When asked if that meant that Loki would not be returning for The Avengers: Infinity War Part One after his appearance in the next Thor movie, Hiddleston backtracked a little:

“I don’t know! Honestly, I don’t know. They haven’t got their ducks in a row yet. They make it up as they go along.”

Entertainment Weekly recently caught up with Hiddleston and here’s what the actor had to say:

“He’s not in it. Here’s the thing: I don’t think there’s anything else Loki could contribute to ‘The Avengers,’ narratively. Joss gave me so many wonderful things to do in that first film that we’d only be trying to repeat ourselves, and probably less well in the second one.”

Discarding a character as beloved as Loki (or even recasting him in the wake of Hiddleston’s departure) seems like it would be a wasted opportunity, and he would certainly make an interesting player in the universe-spanning Infinity War series. For now, however, fans will just have to wait to find out if he survives his next fraternal throw-down.

But the character isn’t gone for good:

Loki fans can still get their fix on Nov. 8, when Hiddleston reprises the role in Thor: The Dark World. “Oh, I’ve got plenty to do in Thor, believe me. A lot of new stuff. It’s a new iteration of the character,” he says. ” It’s a new development. Another trick, another poker game for the god of mischief. And he plays it well.”

Directed by Taika Waititi, scripted by Christopher Yost, Craig Kyle, and Stephany Folsom, Thor: Ragnarok starring Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Mark Ruffalo, Jaimie Alexander, and Cate Blanchett will start filming this June to keep up with the expected release date on 03/11/2017.
