Not only is Oblivion director Joseph Kosinski confirmed for the directing duties, as speculated, a release date has been locked and confirmed for take off.
Paramount Pictures has set July 12, 2019, as the release date for Top Gun 2, the long-gestating sequel to the 1986 hit. Additionally, Deadline has confirmed that “Oblivion” and “Tron: Legacy” director Joseph Kosinski will helm the film which doesn’t have an official title despite “Top Gun: Maverick” floating around this month. Kosinski and Tom Cruise previously worked together on the 2013 sci-fi drama Oblivion.
Tom Cruise is slated to return for the film, reprising the role of United States Naval Aviator Lieutenant Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell. The story will deal with the rise of unmanned drones and pilots becoming obsolete. Jerry Bruckheimer is returning to produce the sequel, along with Skydance's David Ellison and Cruise.
The original film was directed by the late Tony Scott and also starred Anthony Edwards. It saw Cruise play a hot shot pilot who becomes a student at the most elite fighter pilot school in the world, with the ending suggesting he'd go on to teach there.
The film has long been in development and got close several years ago with the original director Tony Scott planning to step behind the camera again. His untimely death shelved the film for years. It comes at a good time for Paramount, which is reloading its franchises under new chief Jim Gianopulos. This certainly gives the studio a branded title with a lot of wanna see attached to it.
There has not been a great track record in Hollywood recently of making long-awaited sequels, reboots, or reimaginings of beloved films. Hopefully, Top Gun 2 will be a big exception to that and steer clear of any comparisons to Independence Day: Resurgence, Zoolander 2, and others.
