Michelle Monaghan Set to Return in Mission: Impossible 6

This marks her third appearance in the franchise.

Director Chris McQuarrie is on the record saying that Mission: Impossible 6 will be more of an emotional journey for Ethan Hunt, and just recently, the Rogue Nation helmer further cemented that fact by revealing quite possibly one of the more surprising and arguably most personal cast additions yet as he announced, via Instagram, that Michelle Monaghan (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang), will reprise her role as Ethan's ex-wife, Julia Meade, in the highly anticipated action sequel.

Earlier, McQuarrie promised a "very different Ethan Hunt"; adding, "I’ve seen five of these movies and I don’t know who Ethan Hunt is. One movie sort of dealt with his personal life; the other movies are about people speculating what’s really going on in Ethan’s head. I want to know who Ethan is in this movie, I want an emotional journey for this character, and Tom really embraced it."

"His approach this time, then, was to say 'I don’t want to string together a bunch of action scenes, I want to actually deal with character'. So I put Ethan in a bunch of complicated moral quandaries, and I’m trying to find ways to connect them – and then, ironically, the way to connect them was through giant action scenes."

Julia Meade first appeared in J.J. Abrams’ Mission: Impossible III, introduced as the recent wife of Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt. Meade was unaware of Hunt’s involvement with IMF, however, until she was kidnapped by Owen Davian (Phillip Seymour Hoffman). Meade then appeared again in the next film, Brad Bird‘s Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol. Ethan Hunt and Julia’s relationship ended in the usual way, with Ethan insisting that they’d have to separate in order to keep her safe after she was kidnapped. Her death was faked, but the only people who know that are Ethan and IMF Agent William Brandt (Jeremy Renner), so her reappearance is probably going to be quite a surprise for the rest.

Mission: Impossible 6 is currently filming, also stars Angela Bassett, Henry Cavill, Ving Rhames, Alec Baldwin, Rebecca Ferguson, and Vanessa Kirby, and hits theaters July 27, 2018.
