Matt Reeves’ upcoming “War for the Planet of the Apes,” the third film in the rebooted ‘Apes’ saga, is making one minor tweak as compared to the previous film.
The conflict between the remnants of humanity and the rising ape population is about to hit its tipping point. Two years after the events of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, War for the Planet of the Apes will see ape protagonist Caesar going up against the leader of the humans, The Colonel, played by Woody Harrelson. While the third movie in the rebooted Planet of the Apes series will an epic battle between both sides like the title promises, but like the previous two entries, Caesar's personal journey will be the main driving force, and his actions will lead to this new story becoming similar to a Western. According to director Matt Reeves:
“It finally cracks Caesar. It sets him on a revenge mission. The movie goes from being this grand war movie to an almost Josey Wales-like Western.”
This movie also introduces a new human character, a young girl named Nova (Amiah Miller), who becomes part of Caesar's "posse." The movie opens with a "stunning ape-versus-human battle through the forest," with the rest of the story taking Caesar to the snow-capped Sierra Mountains. Here's what Andy Serkis had to say about this war with the Colonel.
"The Colonel comes across as someone who's psychotic. But he is fighting for the survival of humanity, as Caesar is fighting for the apes. Expect a loser, but no real winners."
Another new character added to the action is ‘Bad Ape,’ a sweet-natured simian hermit who escaped from abuse in captivity and now lives alone in the mountains. The lonely ape, played by Steve Zahn, is recruited to guide an expedition to a human military camp.
War for the Planet of the Apes also stars Gabriel Chavarria, Judy Greer and Karin Konoval. Matt Reeves directs from a script he co-wrote with Mark Bomback. The movie will hit theaters on July 14, which has that date to itself, but comes a week after Spider-Man: Homecoming and a week after Dunkirk.
